Weight Management Cat Food: Light Diets, Satiety and Safe Weight Loss
Extra weight makes cats more prone to diabetes, arthritis, urinary problems and a shorter life. Helping an overweight cat slim down is one of the most valuable things you can do for its health. Special weight management foods can make the job easier, but only if used correctly.
Is my cat overweight?
Use a body condition score. On a nine-point scale, four to five is ideal. Overweight cats have ribs that are hard to feel, no waist and a sagging belly. Your vet can score your cat and set a target weight. See cat obesity health risks.
What weight management foods do
- Fewer calories per cup or can, from lower fat and more fiber or moisture, so the cat eats a satisfying amount.
- Higher protein, to preserve muscle while losing fat. See how much protein do cats need.
- Higher fiber, which adds bulk and slows digestion, helping hunger.
- Concentrated vitamins and minerals, so that a cat on a reduced calorie intake still gets enough of each nutrient.
- L-carnitine, in some formulas, which helps fat metabolism.
Light versus prescription
- Over-the-counter light or healthy weight foods have somewhat fewer calories, but may only be modestly lower than regular food. They are suited to maintaining weight, or gentle loss.
- Prescription weight loss diets are formulated for active weight loss, with studied results. Cats that need to lose a lot, or that have other conditions, benefit from them. See prescription cat diets explained.
Why measuring still matters
A diet food does not work if you scoop freely. A cat on a light food eating twice the portion gains weight. Calculate calories, weigh the food and track weight. See cat feeding chart by weight and calories in cat food explained.
A safe plan
- See your vet to rule out illness, set a target weight and calculate daily calories. See how to help an overweight cat lose weight.
- Aim for slow loss, about 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week. A ten pound cat would lose about a half ounce to an ounce and a half a week.
- Weigh every two weeks, on the same scale.
- Adjust calories if loss is too fast or too slow.
- Never fast or crash diet. Rapid weight loss in cats can lead to hepatic lipidosis. See hepatic lipidosis in cats.
- Be patient. It may take six to twelve months.
- Maintain. After reaching the target, adjust to a maintenance diet to keep weight stable.
Tips for a hungry cat
- Use wet food, which fills the stomach with water. See wet vs dry cat food.
- Split meals into several small portions. See how many times a day should a cat eat.
- Use puzzle feeders and foraging. See puzzle feeders and slow feeders for cats.
- Play more. Short, frequent sessions. See how to play with your cat.
- Replace treats with play, attention or portions of the daily food. See healthy cat treats.
- Ignore begging, and do not feed at the first meow. See feeding an indoor cat.
Multi-cat homes
Feed the dieting cat separately, or use a microchip feeder. See feeding cats in a multi-cat home.
Medical causes of weight gain
Hypothyroidism is rare in cats, but other conditions, such as diabetes and Cushing's, affect weight. If your cat gains weight fast despite no change in food, see your vet.
Watch for problems
During weight loss, call your vet if your cat stops eating, becomes lethargic, vomits or has yellowing of the eyes or gums. Check that muscle is preserved.
Senior cats
Older cats may lose muscle and weight naturally. Do not put a thin senior on a diet. See best food for senior cats.
Staying on track
Write the daily amount on the fridge, and keep a small jar holding the day's treats. Ask everyone in the household to stick to the plan. Take photos monthly, since changes in shape are easier to see than on the scale. Celebrate progress with play rather than food.
When to see a vet
See a vet before starting a diet, and if your cat loses weight too quickly or becomes unwell. Use the US vet directory to find a clinic.
Frequently asked questions
Are light cat foods effective?
They can help when portions are measured and matched to a calorie target.
How fast should a cat lose weight?
About half to one percent of body weight each week.
Can I just feed less of regular food?
Not safely, since cutting too much reduces nutrients, so use a diet formulated for weight loss.
What if my cat is always hungry?
Use wet food, high-fiber formulas, small frequent meals and play.
