Cat Food Calculator
Enter your cat's weight, life stage and food to estimate daily calories and how much dry or wet food to serve.
How to use the result
Treat the number as a starting point and watch your cat's body. You should feel ribs under a light layer of fat and see a waist from above. If your cat gains or loses weight, adjust by about ten percent and recheck in two to four weeks. Weigh food on a kitchen scale for accuracy, because a "cup" can vary a lot. Cats with kidney disease, diabetes or other conditions need a plan from their vet.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does a cat need per day?
A typical neutered indoor adult of about 10 pounds needs roughly 200 to 250 calories a day, but the number depends on weight, age, activity and body condition. This calculator uses the standard resting energy formula multiplied by a factor for life stage.
Should I feed wet food, dry food or both?
Either can be complete and balanced. Wet food adds water, which many vets like for urinary health, while dry food is convenient and costs less. Many owners mix both. Always check the label says complete and balanced for your cat's life stage.
How many times a day should I feed my cat?
Most adult cats do well with two to four small meals. Kittens need three to four meals. Puzzle feeders and several small meals mimic natural hunting.
What if my cat is overweight?
Enter the target weight and choose the weight loss option, then ask your vet to confirm the plan. Weight must come off slowly, because rapid loss in cats can cause serious liver disease.
