What each life stage means
Kittens need growth diets, vaccines and socialization. Junior and prime adults need exercise, dental care and weight control. From about seven years, subtle changes in thirst, weight and mobility become more common, and vets often add bloodwork to routine exams. Browse the kitten guides, cat care library and cat health guides for each stage.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a cat in human years?
A common veterinary conversion treats a one-year-old cat as about 15 human years and a two-year-old as about 24. After that each cat year adds roughly four human years, so a 10-year-old cat is around 56.
Is the conversion exact?
No. It is a rough guide for understanding life stage. Genetics, indoor or outdoor life, weight and health all change how a cat ages.
At what age is a cat considered senior?
Most veterinary guidelines call cats senior from about 11 years old, and many vets suggest twice-yearly exams from then on. Some cats show age-related changes earlier.
Do indoor cats live longer?
On average, yes. Indoor cats avoid traffic, fights and many infectious diseases, and often live well into their mid to late teens. Weight and dental care still matter.
