The Patient Trainer Who Changed Rocket's Life
RocketDog Β· Shepherd mix Β· together 4 yearsBy the Tailwisp Editorial Team
Rocket was a nightmare on walks. He would see another dog a block away, freeze, and then explode. Barking, lunging, spinning. I was embarrassed, and I was scared that I was making it worse.
A neighbor told me about a trainer who works with reactive dogs, using food and distance and patience, never shouting or yanking. I was skeptical. I had tried three other classes.
The first session, we did not even see another dog. We worked on looking at me. The second session, a calm dog stood very far away across a field. Rocket noticed, looked at me, and got a treat. That was the whole lesson.
It took four months. Today Rocket still prefers his own space, but we can pass another dog on the sidewalk, and he glances at me before he reacts. That glance is the whole game.
My advice, for what it is worth: ask your vet or a friend for a name, look for a trainer who uses rewards and explains what they are doing, and give it time. Ask any trainer how they handle fear before you book. And do not be embarrassed. Reactive dogs are scared dogs.
