Gotcha Day for a Gray Muzzle

PepperDog Β· Mixed breed Β· together 3 yearsBy the Tailwisp Editorial Team

The sign on his kennel said Pepper, 9 years old, calm. Everyone had walked past it. We nearly did too, because we had gone in looking for a puppy.

The volunteer said he had been there 400 days. She said it the way you mention the weather, but her voice caught on the number. We asked to take him for a walk, just one. Pepper didn't pull or sniff. He just walked beside my leg like he had been doing it his whole life, and when we stopped at a crosswalk he leaned his entire weight against my shin.

The first week at home was quiet. He slept sixteen hours a day and didn't bark once. He ate slowly, looking up after every few bites as if checking that the bowl was still his. On day four he found the sunny patch by the back door and has not moved from it since, except for meals and walks.

People say you save a shelter dog. It does not feel that way. The house feels fuller. My kids read to him. He lets them put a little bandana on him, and he puts up with it nobly.

We celebrate his gotcha day every October with a plain burger patty and a long walk. He has three years of those so far. If you are standing at a kennel with a gray muzzle looking back at you, give it one walk. That is all it took for us.
